National Contracts
A significant amount of probation funding is top-sliced by the
Government and spent on national contracts for computer hardware
and software, office rental and purchase and the maintenance of
offices. Contracts for probation officer training are also let
centrally.
We act on our members' behalf as "the intelligent customer",
protecting their interests by scrutinising contract compliance and
service delivery. This involves surveying our members' experiences
of these contracts, presenting the findings to Government and
lobbying for necessary improvements.
Representing members at the highest level
We played a central role in the development of a new qualifying
framework for probation staff working with offenders (the final
guidelines can be downloaded from the document menu on the right).
Our representation on the relevant Ministry of Justice boards which
oversee these contracts places us in the best position to represent
our members' perspective to Government.
We use our influence to ensure national contracts provide best
value for our members.
